Al Quie to speak at StOlaf on 27 Sep 2008
Authored: September 26th, 2008 @ 9:11 AM
From one of our regular contributors we learn …
Al Quie, who grew up in Nerstrand on the farm and went to St Olaf and served as Republican congressman and governor of MN for about 35 years, is a wonderful, admired figure. His particular cause today is also being pushed by Walter Mondale and all the leading legal DFLers, and by Alan Page and the other most liberal justices of the Supreme Court.
Two years ago Dan Griffith won 44% of the vote for Appellate Judge. So now the liberals want to take away the rigt that the US Supreme Court gave to us voters. Since 1888 no one has been elected to the appellate court–they have all been appointed. It was effectively against the law to oppose an incumbent. Now that the Supreme Court overturned that cosy situation, the liberals want to take away our ability to turn out any judge no matter how egregious his/her behavior.
Yes, selection and retention of judges is important. If the DFL replaces Pawlenty in 2010, there might never again be a moderate-conservative judge appointed to the court. To show you where they are going, the DFL last session pushed a bill to change the selection of all regents to run the University of Minnesota to require a direct positive vote by the legislature of all appointees.
