Labels matter … a rose by any other name is not a rose

Shakespeare tells us …
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
- Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet”
Tell that to the people who came up with the “Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)” as a way to allow unions to organize by petitions rather than by secret ballot.
Pro: Businesses often take drastic action to keep employees from talking unionization … including closing shops as soon as talk begins.
Answer: Let’s allow unions to organize secretly by petition, signature cards or other means.
or
Con: Unions often use bullying tactics to force employees to join up.
Answer: Let’s allow employees to use secret ballots to vote yea or nay.
Which world view would name something the “Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)“?
Answer: Both would, but one would mean secret ballots and one would mean secret petitions.
Would this bill sound as sweet if it were the “Union Bullying Empowerment Act (UBEA)“?
The tactics are an issue: Some say pro-life, some say pro-choice. We all say, “phooey on clever linguists who attempt to replace debates on issues with ad-wars using slogans.”
