40,000 to 8.2M … like those odds?

40,000, that’s the number of really wealthy taxpayers in the City of New York. 8.2M, that’s the total number of people living in that city (the metropolitan area is 18+M). One might ask what happens if those 40,000 pack up and leave? Or better, what if they decide to weigh in to the political agenda against the tax and spend metrocrats? A story in the New York Times hints at that. And the reading is like something out of the Godfather.

Feeling Slighted, Rich Patron Led Albany Revolt

ALBANY — In early spring, Tom Golisano went to Albany from his home in Rochester to meet with Malcolm A. Smith, then the Senate majority leader.

Mr. Golisano, a billionaire business executive, had spent heavily to help Mr. Smith and other Democrats win control of the Senate in the November election, and was angry to hear they were now planning to raise taxes on the wealthy. He expected an audience befitting a major financial patron.

Instead, he said, Mr. Smith played with his BlackBerry and seemed to barely listen.
