The “Liberal” Left vs. the Conservative

We all know that the term Fascist is usually applied to extremist goons who use excessive force to move their agendas forward, but as we press on into the reign of the current administration we are often struck by how intolerant and narrow minded the ruling class (e.g., Pelosi et al) have become now that they feel empowered to run roughshod over our essential freedoms.  Many have expressed the idea that the “political correctness” movement, masquerading as a benevolent dictator, is much more akin to Stalinist Russia’s style of rule than to the liberty-loving, “don’t tread on me” conservatives we find in our party.  Now an astute reader brings the following to our attention, and we think it is worth your looking at as well.

Consider this great summary:

“American conservatism is really a liberal conservatism—what it wants to conserve is a liberal regime, a regime devoted to limited government and personal freedom and responsibility—which is why I consider it unfortunate that the label “liberal” has become attached to the Left. But old memories die hard, and matters aren’t helped by the fact the American Left persists in depicting American conservatism as if it’s much more like the old European conservatism than it really is. (In fact, in many respects it’s today’s liberalism or Leftism that’s closer to the old European Right.) This is a powerful legacy that still needs to be overcome.” [emphasis added]

Surprisingly, although the publication comes from the Center of the American Experiment website (Oct, 2008), the author is the Chair of the Department of Political Science at our very own Carleton College in Northfield, Professor Laurence D. Cooper. So, in the spirit of open discussion, we invite you to review his article and see if the leopard can change its spots. And we must remember, we, perhaps, have much more in common with the good professor than we do with some of our own party, where we find statists masquerading as conservatives. But there is change afoot, and the new leadership, rising from the grassroots, promises to take us back to that great liberty-loving foundation.
