Recently Republicans have been working to get our message out to a larger audience. Anticipating the future cross-cultural dialogs, and in an effort to build bridges, we have put some guest commentaries out on MPR that present various thoughts from activists within the party. These idea pieces are good reading for anyone interested in the future of our party.

Oberstar’s defeat may be a sign of a new economic awareness.

In this commentary, Bruce Morlan argues that Oberstar’s defeat is a small victory for the fiscal conservatives as they repudiated a Representative known for bringing home Federal money (bribing the voters with their own money). He concludes the people are ready for real changes, what Gov. Pawlenty calls “quantum” changes.

What the GOP needs to accomplish goes far beyond earmarks.

In this commentary, Bruce Morlan argues that the real evil in earmarks is how they are leveraged to buy support (in the Congress) for bigger problems like entitlements. He cautions against a belief that earmarks themselves are the problem. He suggests that doing away with earmarks, while vital, will not cure the bigger problem.

We Republicans shouldn’t punish members for following their conscience

In this commentary, Bill Paulsen argues that the party central powers have, in the name of party purity, shrunk the Republican tent in defiance of the “big-tent” grassroots movements within the party. He points out that even though he disagrees with some of the positions held by some of the now shunned members of the party, he would rather dialog with them within the party than see them cast out and made available to other parties as supporters.

The authors:

Bruce W. Morlan, Northfield, works as a mathematician conducting research into medical practice and policy. He is an elected Township Supervisor, member of two planning commissions, and a volunteer mediator for Rice County Dispute Resolution Program. He conducts periodic political salons at a local pub and is a source in MPR’s Public Insight Network. He is a delegate to the Minnesota Republican Party State Central Committee, representing Rice and southern Scott Counties.

Bill Paulsen, Lonsdale, is an engineer in the electronics industry. In 2008 he was the Rice County coordinator for the Ron Paul for President campaign and in 2010 sought the Republican endorsement for Minnesota Senate District 25. He is a delegate to the Minnesota Republican Party State Central Committee, representing Rice and southern Scott Counties. He is a source in MPR’s Public Insight Network.

Mike Parry is the Republican candidate for District 26 State Senator.

At the Mike Parry campaign website we see:

The citizen’s of District 26 need someone who understands how to make the tough decisions to balance a budget and close a check book when there are no extra funds available. Our businesses are the life blood of this State and Nation. We need to do what it takes to keep them prosperous and employing our citizens at a good wage. It’s hard to do that when you’re the third highest-taxed state in business and corporate taxes! That’s one of the reasons you’re seeing Minnesota businesses moving to other cities and overseas. This needs to be stopped! We need to get back the companies and jobs we’ve lost over the last 10 years and keep the companies and jobs we currently have. We need a favorable business climate in this State!

Two things go hand in hand, Jobs and Education. Without jobs, there won’t be great education and without education, there are no places for Minnesotans to have good paying jobs. That’s why education will be another strong focus for Mike Parry when elected.

We no longer have a choice but to live within our means and Government should be no different. You can’t spend more than you take in, period! Our government needs to understand that before it starts a new program, or decides on a mandate, it needs to know if it can be funded and sustainable. You just can’t shove it down the citizen’s throat!

It’s time for a ‘Get ‘em back’ campaign. Let’s get manufacturing back to our State. Let’s get jobs back to our State. Let’s ‘Get ‘em (the legislature) back’ to a balanced common sense budget. Time to put an end to an “open check book mentality.”

Being raised on a farm, Mike learned a strong work ethic and knows what it takes to get a job done right….the first time. Trust, Experience, Dedication, Responsibility and Accountability is what we all want in St Paul.

Press Release from the Bill Paulsen for Senate Campaign

On Wednesday, July 22, Bill Paulsen formally announced he is seeking the endorsement of the Republican Party for Minnesota State Senate District 25, encompassing northern Rice County, southern Scott County, Le Sueur County and eastern Sibley County.

Mr. Paulsen believes that it is the people of Minnesota who drive economic prosperity. He understands that the people of Senate District 25 work hard to start new businesses that create jobs and put in long hours to achieve a bright future for themselves and their children. “To help the people of Minnesota achieve their goals, much work needs to be done in the Legislature. Minnesota faces a $6-$7 billion structural budget deficit for the next biennium, a weak job market, and dwindling tax revenues. I will work to advance responsible leadership for Minnesota’s future, rather than reckless spending and special interest politics,” said Mr. Paulsen.

Mr. Paulsen has been a resident of Minnesota for eight years, working as an engineer in the electronics industry. He currently resides in Lonsdale, in Rice County. He earned a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2006. From his experience in the technology world he understands that education is critical for our young citizens.

Mr. Paulsen recognizes that Minnesota must position itself and its citizens to compete in a global economy. This includes ensuring that parents can provide a quality education to their children. “Our children need the skills to compete in the competitive marketplace. I will support parents in choosing the education that best fits their kids. This includes upholding the constitutional mandate requiring that the Legislature in Minnesota provide for public schools while protecting alternative forms of education including charter and homeschooling.”

Budget reform is also a priority for Paulsen who noted that the Legislature adjourned without balancing the budget and even passed spending bills that exceeded expected revenue. “The state of Minnesota must live within its means just like every family in Senate District 25 must do,” said Paulsen.

Paulsen continued, “I look forward in the coming months to meeting and listening to the people of Senate District 25. The people are what make our communities great places to live in and I wish to represent them to help them realize their dreams.”
